{"id":806,"date":"2020-10-31T00:43:58","date_gmt":"2020-10-31T00:43:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.up.edu.pe\/csanborn\/?p=806"},"modified":"2022-10-13T06:02:39","modified_gmt":"2022-10-13T06:02:39","slug":"latin-america-and-china-in-times-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.up.edu.pe\/csanborn\/latin-america-and-china-in-times-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Latin America and China in Times of COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"publication-detail\">\n<div class=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"text-block-inner wysiwyg-content\">\n<p class=\"x\">I recently had the honor of writing the first in a new Wilson Center series on \u201cmedical diplomacy\u201d in Latin America, the region hardest hit by COVID-19.\u00a0 In this article I I examine the geopolitical implications of China\u2019s robust pandemic response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilsoncenter.org\/publication\/latin-america-and-china-times-covid-19\">The article<\/a> outlines Beijing\u2019s timely, strategic, and significant contributions to Latin America\u2019s COVID-19 response, beginning almost immediately after the virus reached the region.\u00a0 China\u2019s support has included medical supply donations, the speedy sale of masks, ventilators, and ambulances, and a promised $1 billion donation for coronavirus vaccines.\u00a0 This Chinese effort has vastly outstripped U.S. support.\u00a0 However, the article also points out that the geopolitical consequences are uncertain. Ideological divisions in Latin America and intensifying superpower rivalries complicate this region\u2019s dealings with China. Moreover, Latin America\u2019s economic relationship with China remains concentrated in the export of natural resources and commercial agricultural products, limiting its contributions to Latin America\u2019s economic diversification and development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x\">Additional reports in this series will look at the U.S. and Taiwanese pandemic responses in Latin America, and the potential impacts of China\u2019s economic slowdown on its engagement in Latin America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently had the honor of writing the first in a new Wilson Center series on \u201cmedical diplomacy\u201d in Latin America, the region hardest hit by COVID-19.\u00a0 In this article I I examine the geopolitical implications of China\u2019s robust pandemic response.
